SAN DIEGO (AP) — JJ Wetherholt delivered a Little League grand slam, and Michael McGreevy recorded a career-high nine strikeouts as the St. Louis Cardinals shut out the San Diego Padres 6-0 on Friday night.

Wetherholt stroked an RBI single to right field with the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. overran the ground ball, letting it slip under his glove and roll to the wall, allowing all runners to score. The play was scored as a three-run error, marking Tatis Jr.’s first miscue of the season.

Later in the same inning, Nolan Gorman added an RBI single, and Alec Burleson crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly.

McGreevy (3-2) tossed six innings, surrendering only a single to Jackson Merrill in the fourth while issuing two walks. Relievers Gordon Graceffo and Ryne Stanek closed out the final three frames without allowing a hit.

Griffin Canning (0-1) took the loss in his second start of the season after returning from an Achilles tendon tear sustained last June. He worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits, six earned runs, five strikeouts, and two walks.
