CBF divulga áudio do VAR de gol anulado do Palmeiras no empate com o Remo

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) released on Sunday night the audio recordings of the video assistant referee (VAR) for the controversial moments in the 1-1 draw between Remo and Palmeiras at Mangueirão: the red card shown to Zé Ricardo and the disallowed goal by Bruno Fuchs (see video above).

Referee Rafael Rodrigo Klein (RS) initially awarded the goal on the field, but VAR official Rafael Traci (SC) recommended a review after identifying a handball by Flaco López moments before the Palmeiras defender headed the ball into the net.

At the time, Klein informed the VAR that he had spotted a possible handball but did not know which Palmeiras player was involved. After viewing the footage, he made his decision:

“I’ve seen it here. It’s a handball; through that arm the ball falls to the white-shirted player who scores. I’m disallowing the goal for an indirect free kick due to a punishable handball,” said Rafael Klein after the review.

“Direct. Indirect, no. Direct,” corrected a member of the officiating team.

Red card for knee strike

The audio of Zé Ricardo’s dismissal was also released. In it, the referees understood that the Remo midfielder did not play the ball and struck Andreas Pereira with a knee. The interpretation was violent conduct, and the Palmeiras number 8 had to be substituted.

“The white-shirted player touches the ball, and he delivers a knee strike to the back. He is with his back turned, the ball is no longer in a contested action. I will change my decision to a red card.”

Palmeiras complaints

Bruno Fuchs himself, along with other club officials, complained about the officiating regarding this decision. Anderson Barros, Palmeiras’ football director, and João Martins, the assistant coach replacing the suspended Abel Ferreira, were among them.

Even Palmeiras themselves released a video questioning Rafael Klein’s criteria, using a dub of a similar incident.

“Touching the ball with the hand or arm

To clearly determine handball offenses, the upper limit of the arm aligns with the bottom of the armpit. Not every contact of a player’s hand or arm with the ball constitutes an offense.

However, a player commits an offense if they:

• deliberately touch the ball with their hand or arm; for example, moving the hand or arm toward the ball;

• touch the ball with their hand or arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand or arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific action. By having their hand or arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand or arm being struck by the ball and that being an offense;

• score a goal in the opponents’ goal directly from their hand or arm, even if accidental, including by the attacking team’s goalkeeper;

• immediately after the ball has touched their hand or arm, even if accidental.”
