According to a report by Spanish newspaper AS on the 12th, the Spanish national team, a top contender for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, has submitted a preliminary roster of 55 players to FIFA.
Although the Royal Spanish Football Federation has not officially released the full list, AS reports that head coach Luis de la Fuente has selected the most players from Barcelona, including nine names: Joan García, Cubarsí, Eric García, Pedri, Fermín López, Dani Olmo, Gavi, Lamine Yamal, and Ferran Torres.
Following Barcelona, Real Sociedad contributed seven players: Remiro, Jon Martín, Sergio Gómez, Gorrotxategi, Carlos Soler, Oyarzabal, and Barrenetxea. Atlético Madrid has five representatives: Le Normand, Pubill, Llorente, Baena, and Barrios.
Arsenal’s contingent includes Raya, Mosquera, Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino. Athletic Bilbao features four players: Unai Simón, Vivian, Laporte, and Nico Williams. Real Madrid has three: Heysen, Fran García, and Gonzalo.
Other notable selections include Pedro Porro (Tottenham), Cucurella (Chelsea), Grimaldo (Bayer Leverkusen), Rodri (Manchester City), Fabián Ruiz (Paris Saint-Germain), Jeremy Pino (Crystal Palace), and Borja Iglesias (Celta Vigo).
Among the 55 preliminary picks, several players have never been called up to the Spanish national team before: Jon Martín, Gorrotxategi, Pubill, Fran García, Gonzalo, along with Leo Román (Mallorca), Víctor Gómez (Braga), Alberto Moleiro (Villarreal), Toni Martínez (Alavés), and Carlos Espí (Levante). Ansu Fati (Monaco), also included, last played for Spain in October 2023.
On the other hand, veterans like Álvaro Morata (Como) and Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid) were left out, confirming they will miss the World Cup.
Coach De la Fuente’s final 26-man squad for the World Cup is expected to be announced on the 25th.
